It used to be said that the U.S. was “a nation of immigrants,” but today that concept is bitterly contested. This class will provide historical background to the current debate by exploring immigration to the U.S. during the 19th and 20th centuries. Major topics include causes for migration, shifting federal policies, responses of older Americans, economic influences, etc. Classes include film clips, lectures and discussions. This is a 3-week course. Classes meet on 9/4, 9/11 and 9/18.
