This presentation explores how the brain learns to read, highlighting the complex process behind a skill often taken for granted. Attendees will gain insight into the science of reading, including the role of phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. The Reading Rope model will be introduced to explain how skilled reading develops. A brief overview of dyslexia will also be included, offering a better understanding of why some individuals struggle and how they can be supported. This lecture is on 9/26.

Rachel Keller
Dr. Rachel D Keller is an educator with a strong background in literacy instruction and a passion for supporting diverse learners. Her doctoral dissertation focused on literacy development for adult language learners. At the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), she teaches pre-service teachers about evidence-based literacy practices and consults on professional development for educators throughout the United States. She is currently pursuing a second master's degree in Reading Science to further specialize in the science of reading with a focus on Dyslexia.
